How it is made
Hand-woven on non-mechanical looms, this Hassira is a traditional palm straw mat with ancient Berber symbols embroidered in a rich red yarn. The graphic sequence alternates various symbols: zigzags (referring to water and continuity); signs that can be read as hourglasses or frogs (regeneration, magic and fertility); small 8-pointed stars (protection and balance); and a “spider” motif (domestic protection). The decoration is regular but lively, thanks to the rhythm of the bands and the irregularities typical of Moroccan handmade rugs. The reverse side shows all the vitality of the raw straw, an unmistakable signature of manual work. Choosing this Hassira mat means supporting a skill that is now extremely rare and bringing home a piece that is destined to become increasingly valuable.
Perfect for…
In an urban home, we love it in a large living room with wood accents and tactile textiles. It’s equally perfect in a bedroom where you want to add a natural, deeply traditional, rustic piece. It pairs best with wood and stone, raw-looking flooring such as terracotta, but also ultra-contemporary surfaces such as resin. If you enjoy contrast, it’s fantastic against metal details and "cold" glass elements.
In a beach house, it blends with lime-washed walls, ceramics and sandy tones. The red decorations resonates with terracotta and cement tiles. In the countryside, it blends effortlessly with exposed beams and wrought iron, and we also adore it in a covered veranda. For extra softness, layer it over a wool rug. And remember: it’s a 100% natural, vegan and cruelty-free choice, practically hypoallergenic and pet-friendly.
The detail not to be missed
Straw fringes, irregular edges, tiny variations, and a backing with raw straw tufts on show: beautiful imperfections for those who appreciate authentic handmade pieces.
