Very large rugs need the right margins
XL rugs work best when they can breathe within the proportions of the room. A rug around 200×300 cm (6.6×9.8 ft), 250×300 cm (8.2×9.8 ft), 300×300 cm (9.8×9.8 ft) or even 300×400 cm (9.8×13.1 ft) needs enough surrounding space to feel balanced: present, but not overwhelming.
Define zones in open-plan rooms
In a multifunctional open space, a 3×2 rug can unify different areas and add cohesion. This is especially helpful when flooring changes from one zone to another or feels visually "cold". This is where oversize pieces truly shine, creating a single visual anchor for the whole room.
Dining rooms: keep chairs on the rug
For spacious dining areas, choose a big area rug that extends beyond the table so chairs stay within the rug’s frame even when pulled out.
