Woven Straw Rugs & Tuareg Saharan Mats
A curated selection of authentic Hassira palm-straw rugs from Morocco, and rare antique Tuareg mats woven from palm and reed by Mauritanian desert nomads. Made from natural fibres, they’re lightweight and finished with wool or leather embroidery. Increasingly hard to find, they bring nature indoors with a quiet-luxury feel.

Built for nomadic life, made to last
These pieces were traditionally made for desert living: large yet lightweight, easy to roll, easy to shake out, and built to serve as a floor for nomadic tents, insulating from sand and heat. That same practicality makes them ideal today as natural floor carpets for living rooms, as well as covered terraces, verandas, and sheltered balconies. Picture an eclectic space for antique lovers, a luxurious bathroom, or a coastal home where sandy, earthy tones meet soft turquoise accents.
Hassira embroidered straw rugs
Hassiras are handwoven natural-fibre rugs made from palm-leaf straw (doum), often enriched with wool embroidery in earthy colours that traces traditional geometric motifs. Thery are still made by women artisans in the rural areas around Khmisset. Today, the craft is becoming rarer, with little generational turnover, which makes each piece feel all the more precious.
Mauritanian Tuareg mats from the Sahara
Our selection also includes reed mats mainly sourced in Mauritania, made from palm wood. Many are vintage or antique finds. They are also known as Saharan leather mats, as the weave is reinforced and decorated with leather strips to create graphic patterns. Their design is essential, marked by symbols that feel ancient and quietly powerful.
A more sustainable choice
Plant-based fibres are an inherently low-impact option: vegan and cruelty-free, recyclable and biodegradable. Versions with wool or leather details are a responsible choice too, as they're crafted from recycled materials and leftovers. And because they’re pile-free, Hassiras and Saharan mats are also a great “anti-hair” option if you live with pets.
What you’ll find in this collection
This edit is our small way to preserve an artisanal heritage we care deeply about. In the collective imagination, the mat is often seen as the quintessential African rug: a tribal rug with an ancient, almost primal charm, marked by mysterious, archaic symbols. It’s a perfect choice for dreamers and travellers like us, for anyone who loves to surround themselves with plants, bring nature indoors, and catch a hint of faraway lands at home.
