A colour with a long history
Red has always held a special place in the world of rugs. For centuries it has been one of the dominant colours in the palettes of Oriental carpets, associated with richness, ceremony and visual power. Even the Pazyryk rug, the oldest known knotted rug in the world, is woven in red wool, with crosses, floral motifs and animal figures in golden yellow and deep blue. It is no coincidence that, even today, this shade remains one of the most recognisable and enduring in textile design: dramatic, elegant and instantly warm. And of course, the most famous symbol of prestige and spectacle is still called the red carpet.
Handmade pieces in many shades of red
Our collections include short-pile and long-pile pieces, as well as flatweave kilims, all made in hand-knotted or handwoven wool. You will also find Boucherouite designs in multicoloured recycled textiles, where red appears in shades such as coral, burgundy, terracotta, rust red and deep wine tones.
And with every trip to Morocco, new treasures arrive: among them, rare Saharan and Tuareg straw mats, where red, blue, orange and green wool threads are woven into striking geometric patterns.
Where this colour works beautifully in the home
This is an ideal choice for many rooms in the house. In the living room, it pairs beautifully with a grey sofa. In the kitchen, a runner in warm red tones can soften dove-grey cabinetry or add life to a more minimal space. In calm greige bedrooms, the same palette brings just the right amount of energy. Red has presence, but in the right tone it never has to feel overpowering.
It also carries a strong emotional charge: it evokes firelight, hospitality and the quiet richness of interiors with an older, layered elegance. If we close our eyes and picture a traditional carpet, many of us would probably imagine it in some shade of red.
Traditional in spirit, timeless in style
This may be one of the colours most closely associated with Oriental, African or more broadly tribal rugs, but its strength lies precisely in how well it adapts beyond those worlds. It is equally at home in modern and contemporary interiors, where it can become a bold accent or a more grounded, sophisticated presence. Just think of an industrial-style space: concrete, steel and metal find a particularly strong and satisfying contrast in red.
