From supporting tone to design anchor
No longer just a background note, grey has gradually become the centre of entire interior design schemes. From the Bauhaus to the 1990s and on to the present day, it has moved through different aesthetics without losing relevance. Many of today’s most loved interiors place it at the centre in all its variations. Scandinavian style, minimalism, industrial spaces, modern rustic, quiet luxury and more contemporary homes all find room for grey, whether in a solid-coloured piece, a black-and-white palette, or a design lifted by touches of colour.
From pearl grey to greige
Scandi and Japandi interiors often favour light grey and pearl grey, sometimes warmed with a touch of blush pink or petrol blue, both of which work beautifully with natural wood. Quiet luxury, by contrast, calls for bouclé upholstery, rugs and textiles in greige: that soft, composed grey-beige so often associated with Giorgio Armani and with a kind of elegance that feels measured, refined and never cold.
When grey turns more urban
Urban and industrial interiors find a natural expression in charcoal grey and ice grey, paired with steel, iron, raw concrete and exposed brick. But even here, grey does not have to remain austere. A darker piece with touches of red, terracotta or mustard yellow can become the perfect stage for richer materials such as velvet, marble, gilded metals, brass or copper, giving the room a more glamorous and decorative tension.
The combinations that work best
Grey works particularly well with cream, beige, ivory, antique pink, ochre yellow, olive green, orange, brown, whale blue and Pompeian red. Satin, polished or chromed finishes can also be very effective, bringing out a more graphic, pared-back and contemporary side of grey.
