How it is made
This splendid Moroccan Hassira mat is a large natural fibre rug, hand-woven on traditional looms. Against a rustic background with golden straw tones, a constellation of small red motifs stands out, reminiscent of the Berber symbol of the spider, a sign associated with femininity that evokes harmony and domestic protection. Horizontal zigzag bands punctuate the rhythm of this regular field, evoking water, the flow of life and continuity. The reverse side is made of raw straw, with the weft and warp perfectly visible. The signature of the craftswomen and their manual work is strongly present, allowing us to admire an increasingly rare mastery. Choosing this rug-mat means bringing home an authentic, one-of-a-kind object, and at the same time supporting a craft tradition that is also a universal heritage to be defended. A purchase that feels like a small investment in art.
Perfect for…
In the city, we imagine it in the grand entrance hall of a period apartment: it adds an unexpected touch, without being overwhelming, and creates a genuinely welcoming atmosphere. Its generous size makes it the perfect natural rug for the living room or lounge area, right in front of a sofa that could use a subtle, boho-chic twist.
We dream of it in a seaside home, where it becomes the perfect rug for old-style floors such as terracotta, cement tiles or stone. Can you see it alongside shell wall decor and batik prints? You can almost smell the sea.
In the countryside, it pairs effortlessly with timber beams and wrought iron, and looks beautiful in a covered veranda or garden room. If you’d like extra softness, layer it over a wool rug. Friendly materials: stone and wood, and even a resin floor if you’re after a slightly more raw, textural vibe. And remember: it’s vegan and cruelty-free, virtually hypoallergenic and wonderfully pet-friendly.
The detail not to be missed...
The large fringes of natural straw, the slight waviness of the edge, the rough reverse, are tangible proof that it is truly, completely, handmade.
