How it is made
Hand-woven following an ancestral tradition, this large Moroccan straw mat is an authentic artefact that is increasingly rare to find. The base, in the colour of natural straw, is crossed by horizontal bands of red, orange and brown yarn, in which elements of Berber symbolism are embedded. The patterns alternate between small diamonds and lozenges, often interpreted in Berber symbolism as signs of protection and vigilance over the home, and tiny floral shapes that refer to life and fertility. Some bands form a zigzag line, others a succession of triangles and rhombuses: all archaic symbols used as protective talismans. The decoration is regular but never rigid: the rhythm of the bands, the slight variations in tone and a few deliberately irregular stitches reveal the craftswoman's handiwork more than any label could. Choosing a vintage Hassira means bringing into your home an object that is both a rug and a small investment in textile art.
Perfect for...
This is a natural rug for those who love objects with a history. Thanks to its size, it furnishes the living room, dining area or bedroom. Natural materials - much loved in biophilic design and Japandi style - warm up the space without being excessive, and are perfect with all types and styles of parquet flooring. It also looks stunning on rustic floors such as terracotta, cement tiles, terrazzo, stone or resin (both matt and glossy). Its natural habitat is a beach house where white lime walls, handmade ceramics and raw fabrics such as linen create the ideal setting. In the countryside, it blends naturally with exposed beams, wrought iron and distressed furniture.
Remember that a vintage mat or rug is a 100% natural, vegan and cruelty-free choice for those who want to combine aesthetics, ethics and everyday comfort.
The detail not to be missed
Looking closely, you can see the slight differences in size between one strip and another, the slightly misaligned stitches, the areas where the colour is richer or paler: these are the most sincere traces of handcrafting. The weft and warp are fully visible, as are the beautiful irregularities and imperfections: maps of the passing of time leaving its mark.
This antique Hassira mat is a unique piece.
