Kharita rug, 1.5*1 m

Handpicked and relatively rare in Morocco
"Kilim" is a word with Turkish roots (with a Persian variant, gelim گلیم), and its history travels far beyond Turkey, to the Balkans, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and China. In Morocco, kilim-style pieces are less widespread than pile rugs, so finding distinctive examples is part of the thrill. Whether you’re looking for a vintage Moroccan kilim rug or a more modern Hanbel, we select each flat rug personally during our travels.

Patterns, symbols and unexpected details
Expect a wide variety of motifs, from diamonds and medallions to zigzags and Berber symbols. Some designs also include small decorative sections with a slightly thicker texture.

Materials that change the mood
Wool and wool-cotton blends offer a matte, tactile look. You may also find viscose pieces, often marketed in the rug world as “sabra” or “cactus silk”. They have a luminous, silky finish and suit those looking for a vegan option.

Where they work best
Large flatweaves sit beautifully in living rooms and open-plan spaces. Smaller formats are ideal in bedrooms or bathrooms. Long pieces can add character to kitchens and entrances. And because they’re pile-free, many are easy to shake out and keep clean. Great if you share your home with pets.

Style tip: also as wall art
Some flat woven rugs are light enough to hang on the wall. Think of them as textile artworks, or as a headboard-style statement in an eclectic, travel-inspired bedroom.
