How it’s made

This Saharan mat comes from Mauritania and belongs to a centuries-old tradition of palm and leather weaving associated with the nomadic communities of the Sahara, including the Tuareg. Its structure consists of hundreds of exceptionally thin palm wood slats, laid side by side and bound together with leather strips. It is a patient, meticulous process that requires considerable skill, both in preparing the materials and in weaving them together.
In this piece, three vertical bands decorated with diamonds and zigzags run along the pale wood surface. Small geometric motifs are scattered between them. Brick red, dark green and ochre stand out against the natural ground, creating a design with a surprisingly contemporary aesthetic.
These mats were once part of everyday life in Saharan nomadic tents, used as flooring to provide a barrier against sand and extreme temperatures. Lightweight and flexible, they could be rolled up and carried during journeys across the desert. Today, this particular form of craftsmanship is becoming increasingly rare as nomadic ways of life change and the knowledge passed down through generations gradually disappears.

Perfect for…

Measuring 140 × 100 cm, this small Saharan mat works beautifully in an entrance hall, a home office, beside an armchair or in a reading corner. Its compact dimensions and geometric composition also make it an interesting piece to hang on the wall as a decorative panel.
We imagine it in a contemporary interior, alongside modernist furniture, wood and handcrafted objects. It can sit just as comfortably among vintage pieces and colourful textiles, in an eclectic home where every object has a story.
An unusual choice for anyone looking for a finely crafted mat made from natural palm and leather, with a character quite different from more conventional rugs.

The detail not to be missed

Up close, the decorated bands reveal the extraordinary precision of the weaving. Fine strips of coloured leather pass between the palm wood slats, forming diamonds and zigzags through a succession of closely spaced bindings. It is fascinating to see how such simple materials can give rise to such elaborate patterns.
The reverse is equally worth examining, as it clearly reveals the mat's construction. Hand-finished edges and fine leather ends left loose along one side complete a piece that preserves the skill and ingenuity of a remarkable Saharan craft tradition.

In addition to having the pleasure of purchasing a very beautiful Moroccan carpet, we were won over by the Amar, Matteo and Jihane home team who conveyed to us their love for their land and told us how their research for the product reaches even the most remote valleys. hidden areas of Morocco to encourage the trade of small cooperatives. Thank you for this nice shopping experience!

Discovering Casa Amar one morning after breakfast in via Pestalozzi was love at first sight. Jihane and Matteo have an unbridled passion, grace and serenity and they also transmit it in the search for carpets, as well as in accompanying you in choosing those that seem to be made for you, with discretion but in synergy. Getting to know the work and commitment of Matteo and Jihane was a real pleasure. Both were very careful in explaining to me the fascinating and complex world of Amazigh carpets. Their help in choosing the carpet was also invaluable, Matteo and Jihane made themselves available for a home trial to make sure it was the right one for me and my home....

Frequently Asked Questions

The actual color may vary slightly due to the resolution and settings of the screen from which you are viewing the web page. Light also has a significant impact: the same rug can appear warmer or cooler depending on whether it is photographed in natural light, with artificial lights, or seen live at different times of the day. There is also a component of subjective perception: everyone sees and interprets colors slightly differently.

For this reason, we always try to show the rug in multiple photos, from different angles and with different lighting. If you need more images or a video of the rug, we are at your disposal: write to us in chat or on WhatsApp, and we will be happy to send you extra material.

We do not have samples of every rug available because production is exclusively handcrafted, and we only work with unique pieces. However, if you wish to assess the quality of the materials and craftsmanship, please contact us: we can provide you with samples and arrange consultations at your home or office. You will be able to personally experience the quality standard we strive to maintain in all Casa Amar pieces.

Casa Amar rugs are not industrial products; they are unique carpets created by hand using ancestral manual techniques.
The small irregularities, the slight imperfections of the rug's edges, the asymmetrical geometries: these are an integral part of the genuine beauty of a handmade product, hand-knotted or made with the aid of mechanical looms operated and handled by artisans. They are also the details that give character to every space.

Don't worry, we're here to help.
To get started, we recommend reading our article "How to place rugs in your home," where you'll find practical examples room by room.

To quickly understand the actual size of the rug, you can mark the measurements on the floor with masking tape or use blankets or sheets to simulate the occupied space.

If you still have doubts, write to us in chat or via email at info@casaamar.it: we'll be happy to advise you on the most suitable size for your room and create a render so you can have a preview of your space.

Send us a photo of your room via chat or email at info@casaamar.it and we will help you choose the best color.
Additionally, we can offer you the RAH Colours test, which helps you identify the color palette that evokes positive emotions in you.

It depends a lot on the type of rug, your lifestyle at home, and your pet's habits. In general, there are no rugs made specifically for dogs/cats, but some choices are wiser than others.
If your cat has very lively claws and loves to scratch on any surface, we advise against flat-weave wool rugs and straw mats, as they could be damaged. Instead, if you have a dog with long, abundant hair, consider choosing a rug with a pile of the same shade. In short, if you have a black long-haired dog, don't choose a white long-pile rug! Of course, you can vacuum, but we always recommend the easiest choices to our customers.
In case of stains, it is best to act immediately by dabbing gently and following the care instructions.

If you tell us more about yourselves, we can suggest the most suitable types.
You can write to us in chat, send us an email at info@casaamar.it, or fill out the contact form from the Contact Us page.

Yes, both hand-knotted wool rugs and natural fiber mats can be used on heated floors.
They are breathable and do not have a synthetic backing (they do not contain glues or latex). The pure sheep's wool used in our rugs is resistant to high temperatures and also has excellent thermal conductivity, allowing heat to pass through easily.
If in doubt, it is best to opt for thin rugs (flat-weave wool, short pile, or mats) and not to cover too large portions of the room where the rug is placed.

For daily care of wool rugs and mats, a gentle vacuuming (low or medium power, preferably with brushes deactivated) is sufficient, and in case of stains, blot immediately with a clean cloth, without rubbing.
